April 2010
"Palm Sunday ... reminds us
that at the moment of what seems to be the height of Jesus'
public acceptance also begins the process of His public
betrayal, His public failure, His public abandonment. Only in
the mind of God is Jesus any longer a success, it seems." -
Sr. Joan Chittister, from her book The Liturgical Year
The walk that we take during
this Holy Week is one of great contrasts. We
start on Palm Sunday with the joy and triumph of the new King,
striding in on a donkey just as the kings of old.
We move to the shared meal and last moments between Jesus
and his disciples on Maundy Thursday, where we hear of God’s
idea of discipleship. We then move to the
cross on Good Friday, where we find the King who rode in on
glory, dying on the cross.
This week is one of drama,
of a story that is central to the Christian faith and central to
each of our lives. It is the story of how far God will go for
us, and how much God is willing to give up to fix what is broken
and heal what is sick. Come and hear the
story!
