Helping Out Our Neighbors in Need
Refugee Resettlement

St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church has made a commitment to help stock the Welcome House with food for the over 100 refugees which will be living there this summer. Most of these new arrivals will be coming from Burma and do not speak English. However, they do need to have the proper food provided for them until they are able to get food stamps which takes about 2 weeks after arrival.

We are asking the congregation for various non-perishable food items which we can store as well as money or grocery gift cards to help us provide food throughout the summer. The food items needed are:

  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Green or Black Tea
  • Instant Coffee
  • Cookies
  • Orange Soda

Additionally, Lutheran Social Ministries has asked us for any other items to help the families as they move into permanent housing. These are listed below:

  • Furniture (in "like new" condition: Drop Off and Pickup Arrangements may be coordinated
  • Sofa's, loveseats, couches
  • Dining room/kitchen tables, chairs
  • Lamps (standing and table)
  • Dressers and chests of drawers
  • Beds (mattresses, box springs and frame) - double and twin size only - much easier to move

Grocery gift cards - Shop Rite or Wal-Mart
Clients can pick out whatever they prefer, especially with the diversity of clients served

Additional Collection Items

  • Cooking utensils, pots and pans (in good, usable condition)
  • Fans
  • Light bulbs
  • Plastic wrap and aluminum foil
  • Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers
  • Microwaves, if small, are OK, but not essential
  • Dishes and glasses in good shape, although we have a lot of those items right now

Health Care Kits

Backpacks and School Supplies

Items not being collected include:

  • Clothing, coffee mugs, Tupperware, plastic food storage.
  • Small kitchen items like toasters, toaster ovens, bread makers, yogurt makers, blenders, food processors, etc.
